Visiting Graduate Students
Post-baccalaureate Enrollment

This option is available to students who have completed an undergraduate degree and want to take UNC-Chapel Hill courses (graduate or undergraduate) but do not want to apply to a UNC-Chapel Hill degree or certificate program. Enrollment Criteria
You will apply as a new visiting graduate (postbaccalaureate) applicant:
- If you have never completed a class for credit at UNC-Chapel Hill.
- If you have previously completed a class for credit at UNC-Chapel Hill but have had a three-year or longer break in your enrollment. (In this instance, your academic record will be reviewed by the Graduate School to determine your status for admission.)
- If you have completed a degree at UNC-Chapel Hill and are now newly applying as a to take graduate or undergraduate courses without pursuing a degree or certificate.
Please apply using the online application form. To begin your application, you must create an account. Test scores and/or transcripts are not required. Application fees apply. For more information, please visit The Graduate School’s Non-degree Studies page.
Note: If you have completed the requirements for an undergraduate degree from an institution other than UNC-Chapel Hill but have not yet graduated at the time of your application, you must provide verification of your impending degree (on school letterhead) from your school dean or registrar’s office. Your application will not be processed until the Graduate School this information, and your degree must be complete by the time you begin taking classes at UNC-Chapel Hill.
You will apply as a readmission applicant:
- If you have completed a class or classes at UNC-Chapel Hill as a visiting/non-degree student during the past three years but not during the preceding fall or spring semester.
Please apply using the online application form with no application fee.
Note: If you don’t enroll in a spring or fall semester (considered mandatory enrollment terms for students), the University Registrar will discontinue your enrollment. The university does not have a way to reactivate you until you apply for readmission.
Summer School visitor enrollment
This option is available for students who only want to take classes during the summer sessions and do not want to continue in the fall. Both students who hold a bachelor’s degree (including high school students) and students who do hold a bachelor’s degree may apply.
Enrollment Criteria
You may apply through the Summer School to be a Summer School visitor:
- If you are a college student enrolled at another university (including international universities).
- If you are former UNC-Chapel Hill student and want to take summer courses without earning a degree
- If you are taking courses to renew an existing teaching license (please consult with the School of Education and the NC Department of Public Instruction before applying)
- Or, if you have an associate’s degree and want to take summer courses without earning a degree.
You should not apply through the Summer School to be a Summer School visitor:
- If you are currently enrolled, full-time or part-time, at UNC-Chapel Hill (see the UNC-Chapel Hill Students section of the Summer School web site for more) information
- If you are a new, incoming student for the fall (see the Incoming Students section on the Summer School website for more information)
- If you previously were enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill but did not graduate and want to earn more credit toward your degree (you will apply through or The Graduate School)

- As a Summer School visitor, you are applying for summer only, not to continue into the fall.
- If you wish to take a Summer School course and apply the credit toward the completion of a degree at UNC-Chapel Hill, you must be readmitted through Undergraduate Admissions.
