Dual Enrollment for high school students
Visiting High school students may take up to one class per semester in fall, spring, and/or summer session II. Any grades earned will go toward your UNC-Chapel Hill GPA and remain on your official transcript. If you later attend Carolina as an undergraduate student, you’ll begin with this GPA.
To enroll you must meet all the following criteria:
- You’re continuously enrolled in high school full-time.
- During the fall and spring, you must live locally, as we do not offer online courses during the academic year. Online courses are available during summer sessions.
- Your school does not offer a course comparable to the one you want to take here.
- You can demonstrate adequate academic preparation for the course.
To apply during Fall and Spring:
- Create your MyCarolina account by clicking “Create an Account.” Check your email for your temporary PIN and password setup instructions.
- Log in, click “Start New Application,” select “Part-Time Student,” and click “Create Application.” You can save your application and work on it multiple times before you submit it.
- Along with your application, you’ll also submit:
- An $85 application fee, unless you are a returning student, in which case the fee is waived.
- A Residency Certification Number, if you’re claiming North Carolina residency.
- A letter from a school counselor affirming they’ve met the above criteria and that the counselor approves of the decision to dual-enroll. Please send counselor letters to ptcs@admissions.unc.edu.
Dual-enrolled high school students pay campus-based tuition/fees as non-degree-seeking undergraduate students, according to the tuition table listed on the cashier’s website.
Once you are admitted, you’ll receive contact information for your academic advisor. If you are planning to take a math class, please submit your AP Calculus, SAT Subject Test Math level 1 or 2 exam scores, or official college transcript to your academic adviser. This lets us verify that you’ve satisfied the appropriate pre-requisite(s) before you register for courses at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Summer School visitor enrollment
This option is available for students who want to take classes during the summer ONLY. High School students can only take courses in Summer Session II.
You may apply through the Summer School to be a Summer School visitor:
- If you are an honor roll student who has completed your Junior year of high school.
- If you attend high school in the US (International high school students cannot be considered for admission)
Note: High school seniors are not eligible to audit courses at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Please visit the Summer School website for more information and to apply.
In addition to completing the online application, the following are required for high school students:
- A current transcript
- A personal statement to the Academic Director of Summer School that includes
- the name and number of the course you wish to take
- the purpose for taking the specific course
- A letter of recommendation from a teacher, principal/headmaster, or counselor confirming your preparation and ability to take the course
- A statement that you will be living with parents or legal guardians while you are attending Summer School if you are under 17 years of age.
Reminder: Rising high school seniors may not take a UNC-CH class if their high school offers the same or a comparable course.
All required documents MUST be submitted by the application deadline.
