- Along with your application, you’ll also submit:
- And $85 application fee (this fee is waived for returning students)
- A Residency Certification Number, if you’re claiming North Carolina residency.
- High school students: see the “Dual enrollment for high school students” section below for additional required materials
Dual enrollment for high school students
Visiting High school students may take up to one class per semester in fall, spring, and/or summer session II. Any grades earned will go toward your UNC-Chapel Hill GPA and remain on your official transcript. If you later attend Carolina as an undergraduate student, you’ll begin with this GPA.
To enroll you must meet all the following criteria:
- You’re continuously enrolled in high school full-time.
- During the fall and spring, you must live locally, as we do not offer online courses during the academic year. Online courses are available during summer sessions.
- Your school does not offer a course comparable to the one you want to take here.
- You can demonstrate adequate academic preparation for the course.
- Create your MyCarolina account by clicking “Create an Account.” Check your email for your temporary PIN and password setup instructions.
- Log in, click “Start New Application,” select “Part-Time Student,” and click “Create Application.” You can save your application and work on it multiple times before you submit it.
- Along with your application, you’ll also submit:
- An $85 application fee, unless you are a returning student, in which case the fee is waived.
- A Residency Certification Number, if you’re claiming North Carolina residency.
- A letter from a school counselor affirming they’ve met the above criteria and that the counselor approves of the decision to dual-enroll. Please send counselor letters to ptcs@admissions.unc.edu.
Dual-enrolled high school students pay campus-based tuition/fees as non-degree-seeking undergraduate students, according to the tuition table listed on the cashier’s website.
Once you are admitted, you’ll receive information about your academic adviser and course registration. If you are planning to take STOR 155 or MATH 231 or higher, please submit your AP Calculus, SAT Subject Test Math level 1 or 2 exam scores, or official college transcript to your academic adviser. This lets us verify that you’ve satisfied the appropriate pre-requisite(s) before you register for courses at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Summer School visitor enrollment
This option is available for students who only want to take classes during the summer sessions. Both students who do not hold a bachelor’s degree (including high school students) and students who do hold a bachelor’s degree may apply.
Enrollment Criteria
You may apply through the Summer School to be a Summer School visitor:
- If you are a college student enrolled at another university (including international universities). Undergraduate applicants must have at least a 2.0 GPA (or equivalent) at their current college or university
- If you are a high school student who will finish junior year prior to Summer School (summer session II only).
- If you are former UNC-Chapel Hill student and want to take summer courses without earning a degree
- If you are a UNC-Chapel Hill student graduating in May immediately prior to the first summer session (When applying, choose the option for “I hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree.”)
- If you are taking courses to renew an existing teaching license (please consult with the School of Education and the NC Department of Public Instruction before applying)
- Or, if you have an associate’s degree and want to take summer courses without earning a degree.
You should not apply through the Summer School to be a Summer School visitor:
- If you are currently enrolled, full-time or part-time, at UNC-Chapel Hill (see the UNC-Chapel Hill Students section of the Summer School website for more) information
- If you are a new, incoming student for the fall (see the Incoming Students section on the Summer School web site for more information
- If you previously were enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill but did not graduate and want to earn more credit toward your degree (you will apply for readmission through undergraduate admissions or The Graduate School)
Please visit the Summer School website for more information and to apply.
- As a Summer School visitor, you are applying for summer only, not to continue into the fall.
- Former UNC-Chapel Hill students who attended but did not earn a degree and who no longer intend to receive a bachelor’s degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, may attend Summer School as visitors.
- If you wish to take a Summer School course and apply the credit toward the completion of a degree at UNC-Chapel Hill, you must be readmitted through Undergraduate Admissions.
- If you are a graduate student and have not completed a degree, contact The Graduate School, CB# 4010, Bynum Hall (919-966-2611).
